Passports required by June 1

by david on May 21, 2009

This information is direct from our Travel Insurance partners at Travel Insured.

The U.S. State Department web site now has a “countdown clock” counting down the days, hours, minutes and seconds to June 1, when new passport or passport card requirements go into effect. After several postponements to give citizens more time to obtain passport documents, the government will put the land and sea requirements of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) into force.

Here’s the scoop on U.S passports

U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean or Bermuda must have a passport or passport card.

U.S. citizen children under the age of 16 will be able to present the original or copy of their birth certificate, or other proof of U.S. citizenship such as a naturalization certificate or citizenship card.

The Passport Card, available through the State Department, costs $45 and is valid for 10 years for adults or 5 years for children under age 16.

It is important to note that the cards, while good for a cruise or land re-entry to the U.S. are not good for international travel, which requires a full passport. This means that if there is an emergency requiring a flight home from outside the U.S., lack of a regular passport for entry could create a hassle and a delay.

Find out more information about the passport card. Regular passports, valid for all international travel and border crossings are priced at $100 per adult and $85 per child under age 16. Passport renewals by mail are $75. Go to http: travel.state.gov and click “Passports” for more information.

Trip Cancellation Insurance

You just cannot escape the nightly news of major job layoffs, downsizing and outsourcing these days. Even those of us with so called secure positions might feel nervous about traveling in case they suffer a job loss between booking and departure of their cruise with Texas Cruise Company.com

Travel Insured’s Worldwide Trip Protector comprehensive, WTP Gold and WTP Lite & Lite Expanded all offer Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage for job terminations or layoffs when the insured or their travel companion lose their job after being continuously employed a minimum three years at the place where the job termination occurs.

The option, which must be purchased within 14 days of initial trip deposit, allows your client to cancel for any reason up to two days prior to his or her scheduled departure date and receive up to 75% of their prepaid, non-refundable trip cost in a cash reimbursement.

by david on December 17, 2008

How about more benefits for student travel insurance?

Travel Insured International, effective Sept. 15, 2008, has introduced stronger benefits for our Student Group Comprehensive, Basic and Post-Departure plans, including the new option to purchase Cancel for Any Reason protection with Basic or Comprehensive. Additionally, new low premium rates now apply whether a Student Group plan is voluntary – meaning an option for each group member – or inclusive, with the premium built into the cost of the overall package and taken by all group members.

Increased Student Group benefit limits include the following:

Trip Delay increases on all three plan types to $750 per student ($150 per day). up from $500 or $600.

Emergency Accident & Sickness Medical Expense is now $25,000 on Student Comprehensive or Post-Departure plans, up from $10,000.

Emergency Evacuation & Repatriation is now $100,000 on all three plans, an increase from $25,000!

Lost Baggage & Personal Effects is now $1,500 ($250 per article) on Student Comprehensive or Post-Departure plans, up from $500.

Cancel for Any Reason is a new option in Student Basic or Comprehensive Plans, and can be selected by individual students or the entire group (but not available in NY or WA) provided the plan is purchased within 14 days of initial deposit.

Low net rates for a Student Group Basic Plan start at $7 per student for a trip costing up to $200, and range up to $82 per student for a trip cost of $4,501 to $5,000. Net rates for a Student Group Comprehensive Plan start at $9 per student for a trip costing up to $200, and range up to $98 per student for a trip cost of $4,501 to $5,000. Net rates for a Student Group Post-Departure Plan start at $4 per student for a trip length of 0 to 5 days and range up to $18 per student for a trip length of 21 to 30 days. Cancel for Any Reason options in Basic or Comprehensive Plans increase the above base rate amount by an additional 50%

We have student travel groups even from the smaller schools in our area.  They often like to visit our nation’s capitol and take trips to historical areas.  We always support their fundraising efforts also.  Student Travel Insurance is another necessary expense and they just need to wash a few more cars to pay for this coverage….just like my child had to do.  The only problem was…I was washing the cars too!

Where do you find this great insurance for student travel?  You know what to do…

Disasters everywhere in 2008

by david on December 13, 2008

The year 2008 will be remembered as the year of high fuel costs and financial challenges for the airline industry, but for Conquest Travel Insurance and Travel Insured International, this is also a year in which the crucial necessity of trip travel insurance against natural disasters has been brought into focus as never before. Think about the year’s headlines. We have seen earthquakes in China and California, West Coast wildfires, hurricanes brushing Mexico, Bermuda and now threatening Florida, and several severe tornadoes damaging the Midwest and South. Also in the news,  flash floods have forced the evacuation of tourists from the Grand Canyon.  Did they all have trip cancellation insurance?

While no insurance policy can prevent an unforeseen natural disaster from disrupting a planned trip, a strong protection plan, such as one of Travel Insured’s Worldwide Trip Protector policies, can alleviate financial and, in some cases, medical damage these events can cause.

Here’s why it is important to you.

Our Travel Insurance plans can cover up to the full, prepaid cost of a trip that must be canceled due to an unforeseen disaster that either prevents you from traveling to the destination for 24 consecutive hours, or renders the destination accommodations uninhabitable.  That seems to have happened a lot this year.  It will also reimburse the added, unplanned expenses involved in either avoiding or escaping a destination on your itinerary when disaster strikes while you are in the course of the trip. Additionally, improved coverage now allows you to be fully protected by the same Trip Cancellation or Trip Interruption benefits when your own primary residence is rendered uninhabitable by a disaster even if your travel destination is unaffected!  That’s what I call trip protection.

And, what if you had planned a golf cruise like we do as often as possible to Cozumel Country Club.  Golf Travel Insurance is almost a necessity and it is often included in policies.

There is also the critical component of full Travel Insured Worldwide Emergency Assistance, Medical Protection and, when necessary, Medical Evacuation included in every Worldwide Trip Protector plan should a disaster result in your injury or illness while traveling.  It is important to remind everyone of the following information on the U.S. State Department web site about overseas travel and medical insurance.  Here’s what they say:

“Obtaining medical treatment and hospital care abroad can be expensive, and medical evacuation to the U.S. can cost more than $50,000. Note that U.S. medical insurance is generally not accepted outside the United States, nor do the Social Security Medicare and Medicaid programs provide coverage for hospital or medical costs outside the United States.”

Finally, there is the less urgent, but still important, baggage loss or delay protection that provides financial reimbursement should your  bags be part of the temporary or permanent baggage misdirection that frequently results when a natural disaster strikes common transportation carriers.

It’s important that you know as much as you can about Trip Cancellation insurance plans and we are happy to be able to provide you with that information.  We’re just here to help.  If you are ready to compare prices or

just look at what’s available, you know what to do…..

Kids are Free?

by david on December 3, 2008

New Worldwide Trip Protector Plans Will Boost Sales and save travelers money!
A recent survey with the monthly newsletter to Travel Insured International’s travel selling partners, including Conquest Travel Insurance, has returned overwhelmingly positive evaluations of the new Worldwide Trip Protector program, including Worldwide Trip Protector, Trip Protector Gold and Trip Protector Lite & Lite Expanded.

Why is all this travel insurance talk relevant to Y-O-U?

One of the new plans includes a provision that “Kids Are Free”.  That one provision will help lots of traveling families save on their vacations.  We all know how unpredictable things are for families.  What if someone gets measles, mumps, chicken pox, a broken bone, or nearly any of a hundred things that kids get into.  That is worth the cost of trip cancellation insurance and if kids are free, it’s even better.

If you also have a golf game planned on your cruise like we usually do, you can also buy golf travel insurance.  it’s a good idea when you are looking at trip travel insurance to consider protecting your outing at Cozumel Country Club.  Of course, my travel agent wife never lets us leave without trip cancellation insurance and we always use Travel Insured International………always!

Conquest Travel Insurance is busy getting the word out on this type of trip travel insurance.  Agents think it is a great idea also.

A solid 88.4% of responding agents said they rated the new program either “good” or “outstanding” with the expectation that the plans will increase their trip protection sales. New features and options in the plans proved most popular, with 86% of respondents saying “Kids are Free” will increase or “strongly impact” sales; 76% saying the “Cancel for Work Reasons” option will build sales and 68.6% saying the “Cancel for Any Reason” option will build sales.

In similar results most of surveyed agents said the redesigned, signature Worldwide Trip Protector plan will “sell well” or be a “best seller”, while three fourths said the same about Trip Protector Lite & Lite Expanded, and two thirds said the same about Worldwide Trip Protector Gold. Agents gave a top score of 98% for either “good” or “excellent” in evaluating how well-informed and helpful Travel Insured’s sales and customer service people are in presenting the new WTP program.

How can you use this information?  Well, the next time you plan a cruise or a trip, remember you read this information somewhere and ask about it when you buy travel insurance.  It’s a real money saver.

How does this work?  Just click on the banner link on this page and purchase your travel insurance here with the above discussed provisions included.

What if you used this information?  Great, you just saved money on your next cruise.  Way to go.

Will airlines leave you hanging?

Airline Service Cuts Increase Need for Travelers to Consider Worldwide Trip Protector Plans

Soaring fuel costs in the VERY recent past have forced major carriers to cut their flight schedules on some routes. What does that mean to you as a traveler?  It’s also bad weather season coming on, what effect will that have on y0our travel?

Here’s some facts: American in late May announced plans to cut 12% of its flights and lay off thousands of workers. Hawaiian Airlines has announced 13% fewer flights to Hawaii this year . Fuel-related expenses have already eliminated some smaller carriers, such as Aloha and ATA, and are threatening others seeking new financing to cover operating costs.

What if you have a trip planned and the airline cuts that flight without you knowing about it, learning about it time, or just not notifying you?  Are you still out the money for your cruise or resort vacation?  What about all the hassle of finding another flight at the last minute?

As a traveler, you may face the possibility that a weather or equipment-related flight delay can result in a longer airport delay due to fewer available flights to many destinations. Could this stop or delay a cruise? Well, it probably won’t stop the cruise ship, but you might not be aboard.  Yes,  it sure could and you need to be protected from that.  It could ruin a golf vacation and for this you would need golf travel insurance.

A delayed bag may also take longer to be reunited with travelers at their final destination.

Click on the banner:

Again, if it’s your golf clubs that are delayed, you might need golf travel insurance or at the very least trip cancellation insurance.  Worldwide Trip Protector and Trip Protector Gold are trip travel insurance packages that include $200 per insured per day in Trip Delay coverage when the delay is six hours or more due to a covered reason and $300 or $500 (for Gold) in Baggage Delay coverage for necessary expenses after a baggage delay of 12 or more hours. Both plans include up to $750 in Missed Connection coverage. Worldwide Trip Protector Lite includes up to $100 per day in Trip Delay, up to $300 to cover a Baggage Delay of 24 hours, and $300 in Missed Connection coverage. Choose Trip Protector Lite Expanded for increased Baggage Delay coverage of up to $500. You’ll be glad you did the next time you are stuck in an airport with an extended wait for the next flight.

Golf Travel Insurance?

by david on November 19, 2008

Ok, admit it.  You are a golf fanatic.  you like to play golf, be on beautiful golf courses and like the golfing lifestyle.  When you travel, how do you know you are covered with the right kind of travel insurance?

Take  my adventure when I cruised around Hawaii and played on five different spectacular golf courses on five different islands.  Now THAT was  a golf travel outing to remember for a lifetime, but I also had the peace of mind that my trip and tee times were all covered by my travel insurance.

If you are more adventurous than golf, there is travel insurance available for that too.  Remember the movie “The Bucket List?”  A couple of old guys out to see what all they can do before they die?  Well, you can get travel insurance for most of that sort of thing too, along with Golf Travel Insurance.

Our WTP Sports Coverage Option is Vital Protection for Active Sports Vacationers.   Given the fuel cost situation, there is a good chance you might be  skipping the long driving trip this year and choosing instead to enjoy your favorite outdoor sports activity.

Here’s the straight scoop.  A new Sports Coverage option, now available on all new Worldwide Trip Protector plans, including WTP Gold and WTP Lite and Lite Expanded, provides you with the coverage you need for participating in a bodily contact sport while on vacation. You should carefully note that without a Sports Coverage Option active sports such as skydiving, hang gliding, parachuting, caving, heli-skiing, racing, bungee cord jumping, speed contests or mountain climbing are excluded from coverage under the Worldwide Trip Protector plans.

However, purchasing the Sports Coverage Option provides coverage by eliminating exclusions for these sports when insured travelers are participating in them within the time of their covered vacation.

Here’s the golf part.   Additionally, Sports Coverage protects prepaid, non-refundable ski passes, golf greens fees, and equipment rentals, and reimburses equipment rentals needed if your owned equipment is delayed by a Common Carrier.  Contact Travel Insured for lots more information on Golf Travel Insurance and how it can protect your plans.  Might even improve your game…who knows?

Travel Insured Responds to MSNBC Article Questioning Travel Insurance

Travel Insured responded to a summer 2008 article on the MSNBC News Web site that posed the question, “Is Travel Insurance Worth the Extra Money?” and then gave a negative answer. “In rare instances it is a good deal, but it often duplicates existing coverage,” the sub-headline stated. Travel Insured emailed MSNBC writer Laura Coffey recommending she consult the U.S. State Dept. Web site for the government’s advice regarding medical insurance.

Did they just get it wrong or was it a young inexperienced reporter?

In my many years in the newspaper business, I saw lots of young reporters who just didn’t do enough good research to get the facts correct.  Whose fault is that.  Well, it’s the fault of the editor and the reporter and the publisher.  All three!  A good experienced newspaper editor with a little common sense could easily tell this was not a complete factual story.  It had some facts.  But, it had left out some critical, pertinent information, and it ‘got by’ somebody with gray hair.  They just missed it.  An experienced copy editor at a newspaper would have questioned that story in an instant.  Apparently they don’t scrutinize as much at Network TV stations.

Here’s an example:

Contrary to Coffey’s statement that “your medical insurance may be valid in other countries.” the State Dept. says “U.S. medical insurance is generally not accepted outside the U.S., nor do the Social Security Medicare and Medicaid programs provide coverage…”

Is that clear enough for anyone but a cub reporter?

A simple fact check could have avoided embarrassing the young reporter and the news station.  However, I sense that MSNBC was looking more for sensationalism rather than facts in this case.  In any case, it didn’t help me believe much else they have to say….at least for a while.

Travel Insured International also cited experts, such as former Consumer Reports travel editor Ed Perkins, whose research disagreed with the MSNBC opinion that “airlines reimburse lost baggage.”  Perkins, in his SmarterTravel.com article of December 2006, reported that airlines find ways to avoid reimbursing clients for lost bags and added, “government rules tend to protect airlines, not passengers.”

I’ve seen lots go wrong and been very glad to have helped provide trip travel insurance to clients.  You just never know when they will need to take advantage of trip cancellation insurance.  I’ve even seen clients use golf travel insurance during an ice storm when a couple couldn’t get to the airport.

Travel Insured also suggested writer Coffey consult published accounts of the 2007 Valentine’s Day ice storm, and travel agents’ customer experiences, to learn that travelers often do not receive refunds after a natural disaster, contrary to MSNBC’s opinion that “you are likely to get a refund if your trip gets cancelled” due to a natural disaster. We had clients who were protected during that ice storm and we can report they were very grateful we offered them Travel Insured Worldwide Trip Protector to save their cruise when they simply could not get to the airport.  It was a lifesaver.

Sorry MSNBC, you missed that one…..too!

Cancel for any reason?

by david on November 8, 2008

Did you know you can buy travel insurance and cancel your trip safely for any reason. Or for work related reasons….or students can buy insurance for travel they can cancel for any reason. Not a bad idea these days when work comes first if you want to keep your job.

Survey results from the monthly newsletter to Travel Insured International’s travel selling partners, including your very own Conquest Travel Insurance, has returned overwhelmingly positive evaluations of the new policies that offer these options. These are the “best seller” products that most folks who go on cruises and other types of trips purchase. The Worldwide Trip protector is the policy we most often sell. It’s a comprehensive product that many travel insurance companies offer a variation of.  As with other companies, you have to specify you want the features, but it’s really good to know they are available.

There are lots of good travel insurance companies out there, but as we stated in a previous post, we like Travel Insured International because of the people who work there. When I found out the employees volunteer for community activities such as Relay for Life and to help fight Cystic Fibroses and Arthritis, then I knew anyone I recommended to them would be dealing with “good people”. I already know they offer very competitive prices because I spend my own money with them.

I like to go a couple of times a year on golf related cruises. I have both rented clubs and taken my own clubs. One thing I try to never go without is trip travel insurance, trip cancellation insurance, and golf travel insurance. I’ve played five different courses in Hawaii, and also love Cozumel Country club, including the Iguanas.

Here’s the results of that survey:

A solid 88.4% of more than 50 responding agents said they rated the new program either “good” or “outstanding” with the expectation that the plans will increase their trip protection sales. New features and options in the plans proved most popular, with 86% of respondents saying “Kids are Free” will increase or “strongly impact” sales; 76% saying the “Cancel for Work Reasons” option will build sales and 68.6% saying the “Cancel for Any Reason” option will build sales. In similar results, 86.3% of surveyed agents said the redesigned, signature Worldwide Trip Protector plan will “sell well” or be a “best seller”, while 77.6% said the same about Trip Protector Lite & Lite Expanded, and 67.3% said the same about Worldwide Trip Protector old. Agents gave a top score of 98% for either “good” or “excellent” in evaluating how well-informed and helpful Travel Insured International sales and customer service people are in presenting the new WTP program.

Yes, I take my own clubs and I take my own golf travel insurance.
